Rutan Canard Electric Retract system (Long EZ / Vari EZ)
A drop in unit to convert your manual hand crank retract to electric. Utilising the mechanics of the hand crank, it requires 4 small holes in the bulkhead and uses a high torque worm reduction DC motor to actuate and lock the gear in the up or down position. Cycling the gear up or down takes only 11 seconds.
The entire installation is 1.8kg (4lbs) and requires the removal of your hand crank handle and shaft. A customised panel is included featuring your tail number, indicator LEDs and a locking on - off - on switch. Choose between a vertical or horizontal switch panel orientation, for placing the switch panel over the section where your crank was, we recommend the vertical orientation.
The entire system has been engineered with all mechanical parts having a safety margin in excess of 5 for edge case loadings. The motor mount is 3D printed from ABS for high temperature tolerance and strength, the switch panel is printed from a high temperature tolerant resin (160 degrees). The Motor is a 60W unit and under normal operation should never exceed 5A.
We have tested, though strongly recommend against, for the motor to lift the nose from the ground. Tested with low fuel loads and no one in the aircraft, under this condition the motor will exceed its rated current, so proceed at your own risk
This system will be compatible with the upcoming Digtial Control System.
